To promote her fifth studio album Lust for Life (which topped the Billboard Top 200 album chart in its debut week), Lana Del Rey performed at House of Blues Anaheim Tuesday night (August 1), following a performance at House of Blues San Diego on July 31.
Lana didn't stray too far from her usual performances in Anaheim. With minimal stage props and subdued costumes, it's obvious that Lana doesn't need much more than her voice and mic to enliven the crowd. Per usual, Lana stood stoically in center stage throughout the show while her two backup dancers, Alexandra Kaye and Ashley Rodriguez (who appeared in the "Lust for Life" music video), added delicate choreography to Lana's simple melodies.
Although the show was dedicated to Lana's newer songs, with many audience members gaining admission through purchase of the album, she also sang old favorites such as "Summertime Sadness" from her album Born to Die, and "Music to Watch Boys To" from Honeymoon, which she performed for the first time the night before in San Diego.
Lana entered the stage quietly, with few of the audience members noticing her until the magical chords of "Body Electric" seeped through the crowd. After reeling the crowd in with an oldie, she jumped right into the Lust for Life portion of the set list with "Cherry."
It's no surprise that Lana's fans are as devoted as they come. The singer took time in between each song to crouch down in the front row to take pictures, receive gifts and hug adoring fans. She even took song requests from the lucky audience members in the front (some of whom camped at the venue for hours to guarantee a spot near Lana).
"Thanks for all this awesome energy, I feel it," Lana said before jumping into an impromptu a capella version of "Salvatore." Per request, she returned with another a capella of "Million Dollar Man" off of Born to Die later in the show.
She finally bounced back to the original set with "Ultraviolence." But after wrapping up the lively tune, she admits that the song's lyrics don't necessarily ring true for her anymore. "That's an interesting song for me. Some of the lines I don't agree with anymore," she says.
She wrapped up the short hour-and-a-half show with "Off to the Races," which lent itself to a bit more choreography on Lana's part. She, Kaye, and Rodriguez moved in-sync to the music while her pianist Byron Thomas jams out himself while he plays.
Before leaving, she sent a heartfelt message to the roaring crowd. "There's so many things I want to say, but mostly, if you're here that means you bought the record. I just want to say I hope you like it, and I hope we see you again soon. Thank you so much for such a fun night."
Lana can't help but exude coolness in all of her shows, making even the largest venues as intimate as possible. Lana will be bringing that intimacy to Scandinavia next, where she will be performing at a variety of festivals in Norway, Finland and Poland starting August 9.
